KIDSAFE CT is dedicated to the early intervention, prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. Our mission is to “partner with the community to educate and empower families and promote the well-being of young people.”
An affiliate of The Village for Families & Children, we are part of a network of centers established by the National Exchange Club Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse.
Our work is supported by a highly active Advisory Board comprised of community leaders and KIDSAFE supporters.
While KIDSAFE CT benefits from back office support and leadership guidance from The Village (payroll, human resources, purchasing, property management and communications and marketing), KIDSAFE remains a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, with funds raised directly benefiting the work of KIDSAFE in the community. Our dedicated advisory board continues to provide input and guidance for the operation of KIDSAFE.
On April 1, 2016, KIDSAFE CT became an affiliate of The Village for Families & Children. For the four years prior to the affiliation, the two nonprofit organizations collaborated on programs for families in the Greater Hartford and Tolland counties. They also co-located services at KIDSAFE’s historic headquarters on Elm Street in Rockville.
KIDSAFE CT opened its doors in 1981 at its original location on Court Street in Vernon, in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Children and Families and several other State programs, with the mission of providing prevention, intervention and treatment for child abuse and neglect. Shortly thereafter, we signed an agreement with the National Exchange Club Foundation to become its first Child Abuse Prevention Center.
KIDSAFE took on another project and partnered with the Cornerstone Foundation to give their Youth Center more structure and support. We provided extensive programming for the Center until 2017, when funding for this program ended. The Center is still being run by Cornerstone and is open two nights a week.
We began partnering with The Village for Families & Children to provide reunification and community support services for local families. The partnership was furthered by a collaboration grant that enabled us to consolidate in order to improve efficiency and effectiveness of services.
Our Executive Director at the time helped establish the Vernon Community Network, an organization that connects community agencies and encourages collaboration to further engagement. KIDSAFE remains an active member of the Network today.
We were reaccredited as a Child Abuse Prevention Center through the National Exchange Club Foundation, receiving an AAA score.
KIDSAFE formalized our affiliation with The Village in 2016, which has allowed us to grow and expand in ways that help even more children and families.
KIDSAFE CT has been supported by Exchange Clubs since its inception through financial support, in-kind donations, volunteering at fundraisers and help in maintaining the Victorian home in which we reside. We would not have been able to continue to provide child abuse and neglect prevention and treatment services to the community without the caring and generosity of the Connecticut Exchange Club members.
